Free-space twin-field quantum key distribution

AI Insight

Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) is a protocol designed to extend the maximum transmission distance of quantum cryptographic key exchange beyond the fundamental rate-distance limits of standard QKD. This work demonstrates TF-QKD implemented through free-space optical channels rather than optical fiber, representing a significant step toward satellite-based quantum communication networks. The experiment validates that the twin-field approach, which relies on single-photon interference between two distant users meeting at a central relay, can function in atmospheric free-space conditions.

Free-space TF-QKD is a critical enabling technology for global quantum-secure communications, as it opens a path toward long-distance ground-to-satellite key distribution that could eventually link intercontinental quantum networks without relying entirely on ground-based fiber infrastructure.
