Abyssal zone

The Abyssal zone is the deepest region of the ocean, extending from about 13,000 feet down to nearly 20,000 feet below the surface, where sunlight cannot penetrate and the water is extremely cold and under crushing pressure. Despite these harsh conditions, this mysterious realm is home to bizarre creatures specially adapted to survive in complete darkness, such as anglerfish with bioluminescent lures and giant squid with enormous eyes. Scientists continue to explore the Abyssal zone to understand how life persists in Earth's most extreme environments and to discover new species that might teach us about the limits of life itself.
