Blazar

1 article · Physics · Wikipedia

A blazar is one of the most energetic objects in the universe, powered by a supermassive black hole at the center of a distant galaxy that shoots out jets of particles and radiation at nearly the speed of light. What makes blazars special is that one of these jets happens to point almost directly at Earth, which is why we detect such intense and rapidly changing radiation from them. Because of this perfect alignment, blazars are some of the brightest objects we can observe and are valuable laboratories for studying black holes, extreme physics, and the early universe.
