Light scattering

1 article · Physics · Wikipedia

Light scattering is the process where light bounces off particles or surfaces and travels in many different directions instead of continuing straight ahead. This happens constantly in nature—for example, when sunlight hits water droplets in the air creating a rainbow, or when fog makes distant objects appear hazy because light scatters off tiny water particles. Scientists study light scattering to understand everything from how our atmosphere works to how to design better optical materials.
