Oxidative stress occurs when there's an imbalance between harmful molecules called free radicals and the body's ability to neutralize them with antioxidants. Free radicals are unstable atoms or molecules with unpaired electrons that damage cells by stealing electrons from other molecules, a process called oxidation.
