Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by infection with flatworms of the Schistosoma genus, transmitted to humans through contaminated freshwater. When people wade or swim in water harboring infected snails, microscopic larvae penetrate the skin and develop into adult worms that live in blood vessels.
