Solar flare

1 article · Astronomy & Space · Wikipedia

A solar flare is a sudden, intense burst of energy released from the Sun's surface, typically caused by the explosive release of magnetic energy built up in the Sun's atmosphere. These powerful flares can release as much energy as millions of nuclear bombs and send streams of charged particles hurtling toward Earth at speeds of millions of miles per hour. While they can occasionally disrupt satellite communications and power grids here on Earth, solar flares also create the beautiful auroras we sometimes see in the night sky.
