Supersonic speed

3 articles · Astronomy & Space, Physics · Wikipedia

Supersonic speed refers to any velocity faster than the speed of sound, which travels at approximately 761 miles per hour at sea level. When an object like an aircraft or missile travels supersonic, it moves so fast that it actually outruns the sound waves it creates, resulting in a sonic boom—that dramatic explosive sound you hear when a jet breaks the sound barrier. This remarkable feat requires tremendous engine power and was first achieved by pilot Chuck Yeager in 1947, opening up a new era of aviation.
