Tooth decay, or dental caries, is the progressive destruction of tooth structure caused by bacterial acid production. It occurs when harmful bacteria in your mouth consume sugars and starches from food, producing acids that erode the tooth's hard outer layers—first the enamel and then the softer dentin beneath.
