[Correspondence] Cruise ship hantavirus outbreak in remote island communities

On April 27, 2026, the Dutch-flagged expedition cruise ship MV Hondius arrived at Ascension Island, a remote mid-Atlantic UK Overseas Territory (UKOT). The vessel had left Ushuaia (Argentina) on April 1, 2026, then visited the Antarctic Peninsula and other UKOT islands in the south Atlantic: the British Antarctic Territory, South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, and St Helena (figure).1 At Ascension Island, a 69-year-old man (case 3) with a severe respiratory syndrome was admitted into the care of the island’s small medical team.
