Researchers have developed a single terahertz metasurface that can perform eight different Boolean logic operations (AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR, NOT, and buffer) by exploiting polarization multiplexing. The device uses specially designed meta-atoms that respond differently to various polarization states of incoming terahertz waves, allowing multiple logic functions to be encoded within one passive structure. This approach eliminates the need for multiple separate components or active switching mechanisms to perform different computational tasks.


This technology could enable compact, high-speed terahertz computing systems and signal processing devices that operate without power consumption since the metasurface is passive. The ability to perform multiple logic operations with a single component could lead to miniaturized terahertz circuits for applications in wireless communications, sensing, and data processing.
