South African medicinal plants show promising antioxidant and antimicrobial properties

AI Insight

This study investigated the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of medicinal plants from northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, along with their phytochemical composition and safety profiles. The research evaluated the therapeutic potential of these traditionally used plants through standardized laboratory assays measuring their ability to neutralize free radicals, inhibit bacterial growth, and identified their active chemical compounds. Safety assessments were conducted to determine potential toxicity levels for human use.

The findings could validate traditional medicine practices and identify plant-based compounds for developing new antimicrobial and antioxidant therapies, particularly important given rising antibiotic resistance. This research also contributes to preserving indigenous knowledge while providing scientific evidence for safe medicinal plant use in communities where these plants are traditional remedies.
