The worsening outbreak of Ebola virus disease caused by Bundibugyo virus (Orthoebolavirus bundibugyoense; BDBV) in DR Congo and Uganda,1–3 declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by WHO on May 17, 2026,4 underscores the continuing threat posed by emerging infectious diseases in an increasingly interconnected world. The outbreak has expanded rapidly, with transmission across borders and into displacement camps in eastern DR Congo, where conflict, population movement, overcrowding, and limited access to health services have complicated response efforts.
