Antigen

An antigen is any foreign substance that triggers your immune system to respond, such as a virus, bacteria, or protein from an invader. Your body recognizes antigens as "non-self" and produces antibodies or immune cells to attack and neutralize them, which is how your body fights off infections. Think of antigens as the alarm that alerts your immune system that something dangerous has entered your body.
