[Correspondence] Bundibugyo virus: coordinating a cross-border response

On May 15, 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda declared outbreaks of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus. On May 17, 2026, the Director-General of WHO determined that the epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, approximately 48 h after the outbreak declarations.1 By Aug 26, 2026, 5815 confirmed cases and 2788 deaths had been reported, including 5794 cases and 2786 deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where transmission had spread to 60 health zones across six provinces.
