This theoretical physics study converts existing experimental limits on elastic dark matter interactions into constraints for inelastic dark matter scattering scenarios. The researchers focus on light dark matter particles in the GeV mass range and analyze three specific interaction models: isoscalar, proton-philic, and proton-philic spin-dependent configurations. By reinterpreting current direct detection experimental data, they establish upper bounds on event rates for these alternative dark matter interaction mechanisms.

This work helps experimentalists better interpret their dark matter search results by extending the applicability of existing data to cover additional theoretical models. The constraints provided can guide future dark matter detection experiments and help narrow down the properties and interaction mechanisms of potential dark matter candidates.

Abstract: We convert existing exclusion limits on the elastic spin-independent (SI) dark matter–proton cross sections into upper bounds on the event rate, subsequently applying them to constrain other effective operators for inelastic scattering of light dark matter in the GeV mass region. We focus on three representative scenarios including the isoscalar, proton-philic, and the proton-philic spin-dependent inelastic dark matter model, which are well-motivated in phenomenological studies of dark matter detection.
