AI Insight

Eating and feeding disorders are severe psychiatric conditions that create significant burden for patients, families, and society. Anorexia nervosa presents particular treatment challenges due to high medical risk and patient ambivalence toward intervention. Current treatment approaches rely primarily on psychological interventions with medications serving a supportive role, while new biological and technology-based treatments are developing slowly.

This seminar highlights the serious nature of eating disorders and the treatment challenges clinicians face, particularly with patient engagement in anorexia nervosa. Understanding that psychological interventions remain the primary evidence-based approach is crucial for clinical practice, while recognizing the limited progress in developing novel treatments points to an area needing further research investment.

The eating and feeding disorders are serious psychiatric disorders at the mind–body interface, often with an exceptionally high burden for affected individuals, their families and supporters, and wider society. In anorexia nervosa, high acute medical risk and patients’ ambivalence about treatment can make a challenging combination that can impede engagement. First-line treatments for eating disorders are mainly psychological, with medications playing an adjunctive role. Novel biological and technology-based interventions are only slowly emerging.
