Sonic boom

2 articles · Astronomy & Space, Physics · Wikipedia

A sonic boom is the loud explosive sound created when an object travels faster than the speed of sound, breaking through the invisible sound barrier. As the object moves, it compresses the air in front of it into a dense shockwave that builds up and then suddenly releases, producing that characteristic thunderous crack we hear. This phenomenon is why supersonic jets and rockets create such startling booms when they fly overhead at high speeds.
