Molecular and Morphological Evidence Reveals Cryptonema producta in Shui Hau, Hong Kong, Previously Misidentified as Anomalocardia flexuosa

AI Insight

For over four decades, a bivalve population in Shui Hau, Hong Kong, has been recorded as Anomalocardia flexuosa, a commercially exploited species native to the Atlantic coast of South America. Using an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphological re-examination and molecular phylogenetic analysis of the COI gene, researchers have determined that this population has been systematically misidentified. The Hong Kong specimens actually belong to Cryptonema producta (also known as Anomalocardia producta), a distinct species.

Correct species identification is critical for fisheries management, conservation policy, and biodiversity assessments, as misidentification can lead to flawed ecological data and poorly targeted resource management decisions. This finding also highlights the importance of integrative taxonomy in resolving biogeographically implausible species records in coastal ecosystems.

For over four decades, the bivalve Anomalocardia flexuosa has been recorded in Hong Kong coastal waters. However, the known native distribution of this heavily exploited commercial species is restricted to the Atlantic coast of South America, raising questions about the biogeographical validity of the Hong Kong populations. By employing an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphological re-evaluations and molecular phylogenetic analysis of the COI gene, we confirm that the species in Shui Hau, Hong Kong, China, has been historically misidentified. The population belongs to Cryptonema producta (syn. Anomalocardia producta).
